Full Description
Depopulated settlement, the remains of a small township scattered on both sides of the public road from Braemar to Bridge of Dee. They can be roughly divided into two groups, which may reflect different dates. The buildings to the southwest of the road survive mainly as levelled terraces set into the slope of heather-covered ground and range from 8.8m to 13.2m in length and between 4m and 4.6m in breadth. There is also a poorly preserved kiln-barn with an oval kiln. The buildings to the northeast of the road are of different character, rectangular on plan and more substantial in size. They range from 5.2m to 16m in length and between 3.9m and 5.6m in breadth. Several have outshots. A little apart from the settlement are two collapsed kilns, a rectangular structure with a flue opening to the northwest where a barn extends to the northwest. There is also a free-standing circular structure 4m in diameter with a flue opening to the northeast.
