Full Description

Remains of sheep-pens. There are fifteen sheep-pens in heather-covered ground. All but one are circular or slightly oval and they range from 3.75m to 5.6m in diameter within turf banks between 0.5m and 0.9m in thickness and between 0.25m and 0.6m in height. Six of them have gaps or entrances. The remains were recorded during walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in January 2025 (NN99SE0009) ahead of proposed fencing. A total of 21 features were recorded, 17 of these comprising heather covered turf bank enclosures, varying in diameter though the majority of 5 m diameter internally, and with walls ranging from 0.6 m to 1.2 m wide, and between 0.1 m and 0.7 m high. Ten had visible entrances. No stone was apparent in their construction. Remains of two stone and turf built circular enclosures were recorded, one with an inner diameter of 5.2 m, and walls 0.8m wide standing to 0.3 m. The second was 6 m in diameter internally, the walls up to 1 m wide and 0.15 m high. Within the centre of the western cluster of circular enclosures were the possible remains if a U-plan stone and turf enclosure, comprising two banks 7 m long, joined by another bank 5 m long, standing to 0.2-0.3 m high. An L-plan rough stone structure, built from of undressed large and small river boulders, measured 8 m by 4 m, the walls standing to a height of 0.2-0.3 m.
