Full Description

Remains of two shielings (huts) and an animal pen, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. Surveyed in 1993 by RCAHMS. The better-preserved hut is situated on a slight rise at NN 9222 8475, and is sub-rectangular in shape with a rounded south-southwest end. It measures 8.4m by 5m. The turf and stone walls spread to a thickness of 1.9m. It has an entrance on the west-northwest side, opening out onto a platform circa 3.8m wide. At the north-northeast end of the hut, a small enclosure is attached. About 9m to the southeast there is a small circular pit circa 3m in diameter. This hut, and the platform outside the entrance, are paralleled at the earlier of the two buildings at Black Bothy, about 2km downstream (NN98NW0003). The second hut is situated circa 20m to the south-southwest. It has been extensively robbed but enough remains to define it as 11.1m in length by 3m broad, and is divided into two compartments.
