Full Description
Remains of church, dedicated to St Fergus. The remains stand in an old graveyard and consist of the north and south walls, circa 0.8 m thick, circa 2.4 m high and circa 19.8 m long, the distance between them being 5.2 m. Parts have been reconstructed and they both incorporate tombstones of early 17th Century and later. There is no trace of the east or west gable. There is a small mort-house with wall steps adjoining the boundary wall. The church was abandoned when the population moved landward to escape the encroaching sea. In 1603 the presbytery recorded that 'Both kirk and kirkyard is ouircassin with the sand'. The arched gateway into the churchyard was enlarged and repaired in 1833. The graveyard is still in use, and contains four First and Second World War Commonwealth war graves. At some point in the past, the original door of the mort-house was lost and had been infilled with breeze blocks and cement, now replaced by a simple timber door.
