Full Description

Village of Boddam which may have its origins in the 17th Century as a settlement associated with Boddam Castle (NK14SW0002). It developed considerably in the 18th and 19th Century during the East coast fishing boom and once had 13 curing yards. The village is depicted on an estate map of 1855 (when the estate was owner by the 4th Earl of Aberdeen) which shows the irregularly built seatown and rocky inlets where boats could be drawn up, contrasting with the broad streets (Russell Street and Gordon Street) of the new housing following in part a plan drawn up by William Whyte. The estate was sold in the mid 19th century to William Aiton who made improvements to the north harbour. Growth in the number of locally based drifters and an increase in population followed, and further building took place in New Street on the village yards and along arterial roads.
