Full Description

Remains of a granite polishing works which is shown on the OS maps from the 1st edition OS map onwards. On the 1st edition OS map it is shown as a long U-shaped range with aqueduct extending to the south-west and terminating in a pond, which is fed from sources higher up to the south-west. By the 2nd edition map the buildings are shown as two ranges in parallel, with a C-shaped building, with extension on the north range, to the east. Two cranes are also depicted. The pond to the south has a mill dam marked. In 1892, when visited by the Buchan Field Club, it was worked by Heslop, Wilson and Co. On vertical aerial photographs taken in 1978 the northern of the two larger buildings is shown as partially derelict and the pond has been drained. The 2006 map shows that the northern building is disused and that the C-shaped building, apart from the northern extension, has been removed. The site of the pond and aqueduct are undeveloped. Now Millbank Motors. Site visit 2014 noted that a number of buildings and walls survive, including the main long building and office building at the entrance, although the north range has been demolished apart from the wall facing the road. On the east side of the site is a large waterwheel pit.
