Full Description

Lighthouse, built in 1827, designed by Robert Stevenson. Tall tower painted in red and white stripes, with walkway supported on corbels with arched openings. Tower rises from a circular one storey base. Interior has a cantilever spiral staircase. There are two blocks of ancillary buildings, one flat roofed. On an island connected to the shore by a three-span concrete bridge. Aside from a lighthouse, this complex also includes a concrete bridge, built 1963, linking the island to the main land and a row of keepers' cottages. In 2012, the tungsten lamp and rotating lens panels were replaced with 2 fixed flashing LED lanterns to act as a new aid to navigation. Following removal of the lens, it is to be relocated to Sumburgh Head Lighthouse (Shetland). Site visit in 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey.
