Full Description

Footbridge built in 1991, as a replacement for an original concrete structure built in 1924 as a gift of local philanthropist Alexander Birnie, and dedicated to his father George Birnie who had served as harbour master of Peterhead. The bridges replaced a ferry crossing slightly downstream (NK14NW0601). Site visit in 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. A granite memorial plaque for the original bridge stands on the east side of the south end of the bridge: the inscription reads ' Birnie Memorial Bridge Presented to the town of Peterhead by Alexander Birnie esq. of Wellbank in memory of his father George Birnie for many years harbour master of Peterhead 1924'.
