Full Description

Former Caledonian Ship Chandler's Warehouse (26-32 Harbour Street and 2-12 James Street), built in 1805. The main part of the warehouse is a 4-storey ashlar granite granite built structure, East elevation has 10 windows and a centre door on each floor. The north end has a curved corner corbelled to square at first floor level, skewputs and jerkin-head gables to North elevation. The south end, onto James Street, may be earlier in date, and is a 3-storey 5-window squared granite-built building with a curved corner (onto James Street). Also used as granary buildings in the mid-19th Century. A initial photographic record was made in 2010 by HAS in advance of proposed conversion: the buildings were found to be in poor condition and large areas were inaccessible. Follow-up visits were made in 2011 to record 26 Harbour Street after stripping out and in 2012 to record the burnt out interior of 2-12 James Street after it had been cleared of debris.
