Full Description

Site of a well. Known as St. Peter's Well before 1592, because the medicinal waters were visited on St Peter's Day, later known as the Wine Well. By the 17th Century, Peterhead was well established as a spa. The site of the mineral well is marked by a stone next to the life-boat shed. The stone bears the arms of the Keiths and was formerly set above the door which gave access to the mineral well. As early as 1680 it was said that 'the cures wrought at this well are truly remarkable'. To complement the well, hot baths were installed in the Masonic Lodge which stood on the site, and an open-air cold pool was built in 1800. This pool can still be seen behind the life-boat shed. The well-house stands at foot of Jamaica Street, where only the southeast corner is now visible.

Period Notes
Known before 1592, but first reported mid-17thC. Mentioned in 1680, and very popular by 1759. Hot baths were installed and open-air cold pool built 1799-1800.
