Full Description

Remains of a church and associated graveyard. The medieval church of St Combs (St Columba) was abandoned in 1608 when a new church was built 2 miles further inland. All that remains is part of the west gable, pierced by a small square-headed window and a fragment of the north wall. Some 18th and a few early 19th Century gravestones survive in the churchyard. The graveyard also contains the Commonwealth war grave of J. Wilson, Royal Naval Reserve, who died 4 March 1919. Site visit in September 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey noted additional fragments of north wall remaining. No gravestones obviously of 18th century date were observed.

Period Notes
Medieval church of uncertain date. Some 18th & a few early 19thC gravestones in churchyard. Abandoned in 1607-8 for the new kirk at Lonmay.
