Full Description
Graveyard and cemetery, still in use. The old graveyard of Philorth Church (NK06NW0001) has been considerably expanded, initially to the southeast by the time of the 2nd edition OS map and subsequently also to the north and south, with a lodge at the north entrance. The cemetery contains 31 Commonwealth burials of World War I and 30 burials of World War II, including four unidentified seamen of the Merchant Navy. The cemetery also has the grave of Joseph Watt, Royal Naval Reserve, who was awarded the Victoria Cross 15 May 1917, and died 1955. Near the middle of the old portion is a large brick built vault with arched roof above ground, the family burial place of John Gordon Esquire of Kinellar and his son in law William Fraser. An archaeological evaluation was carried out at NK0009765368 by Cameron Archaeology in July 2016 following the discovery of bones during grave digging. This recorded a trench of possibly 20th century date cut prior to the 1977 cemetery extension and containing cans, glass bottles, ceramics, wood and human bone. It suggests that there may have been graves to the south of the 19th century graveyard, possibly associated with the 13th century Philorth graveyard but their original location is unknown.
