Full Description
A small 20th Century harbour serving Cairnbulg and Inverallochy, home to around 200 boats at the height of the herring boom but is no longer used commercially. The breakwater was expanded in the 1980s using leftover World War II anti-tank blocks from the nearby beach. RAF photographs taken in 1941 show two rows of blocks running from the south end of the pier approximately 100 m westwards. About two-thirds of the harbour is made of these blocks. Now used as a marina for leisure-craft. Photographed during site visit in September 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey: no blocks were seen on the beach.
Period Notes
Records of fishing here go back to the 16thC; expanded hugely in 19thC due to herring boom.
