Full Description

Former Coastguard Station, no longer used by coastguards but converted to a dwelling house. Contained a unique apparatus trailer which has been used in many rescues along the coast from Fraserburgh to Cairnbulg. The rescue 'cartie' is a very old but well-preserved two wheeled hand cart. Depicted on the OS 2nd edition map as 'Life Saving Apparatus House. To the west the map shows the location of the rocket apparatus at NK 03565 65557, not shown on later maps. Site visit in 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey recorded the stump of an iron tripod leg and an iron securing peg. The rocket pole (locally known as the Monkey Pole) is now at the memorial stone to the southwest at NK 03504 65442. It represented the mast of a ship in rocket apparatus training and practice sessions. The rocket apparatus, was developed in the early 19th century by Henry Trengrouse. A rocket carrying a thin line was fired to a ship in distress, and then used to set up a zip line and harness (breeches buoy) from ship to shore to rescue the crew. The apparatus could be taken to the scene of a wreck on a cart. The life saving equipment was installed at several fishing villages in the area in 1826 and was last used at Cairnbulg in 1985.
