Full Description
Remains of a church, dedication unknown, and associated graveyard. The church is supposed to have been built in the early 15th century. The gate piers of the burial ground have been constructed of salvaged graveslabs, one dating to 1617, the baluster legs from table tombstones and what appear to carved pediments perhaps from a pair of dormer windows or perhaps from a bellcote. Above one of the church doors was a stone dated 1576, but this is more likely to be a date of repair than construction, as there was also a font, probably a piscina, at the east end of the church, indicating an earlier date. Now no trace of dated stone or font. All that is left is the south wall, built of random masonry with rubble infilling, measuring about 8 m in length and standing 2.3 m high. It incorporates the remains of a round-arched doorway and an unusual square-headed window with cable mouldings on the exterior face. There are two fine armorial panels, probably cut down from post reformation table tombs, set in an interior splay, and stones of 1652 and 1697 set into the wall. The burial ground, still in use, has a good collection of 18th century monuments. Prominent in the old graveyard is the Bannerman obelisk, a memorial monument of grey granite commemorating Charles Bannerman of Crimonmogate and his family. The inscription read: 'Charles Bannerman, VIII. Baronet of Elsick, born 18th August, 1782, died in London, 18th June, 1851, aged 68; and Anne Bannerman, his wife, born 3rd December, 1791; died at Crimonmogate, 2nd September, 1838, aged 47. Mary Elizabeth, second daughter of Charles Bannerman and Anne Banner- man, died at Crimonmogate, August 1838, aged 8. Ann Catherine, third daughter of Charles Bannerman, Bart., and Anne Bannerman, died at Crimonmogate, February 1847 aged 15.'. The extension to the west includes two First World War Commonwealth war graves.
