Full Description
Mansion house and site of manor. The house dates from the 18th century with large 19th century reconstruction, and lies on or near the site of the 'mannor of Cairngall' which in 1721 belonged to Alexander Arbuthnott. Two years later it was described as 'a stone house'. The estate of Cairngall was already a possession of this branch of the Arbuthnott family in 1657. Cadets of Arbuthnott in the Mearns, they included a number of well known Jacobites. The present house has slightly advanced wings with quoins and margins added. To the south is walled garden, with curved flank garden walls to the south front and sundial. A dovecot, dated 1811, is of square plan with flank screen walls and a round arched doorway with date panel above. It was raised later as a water tank, the addition stuccoed and crenellated. West of the house the 1st and 2nd edition maps show further walled gardens, the 2nd edition showing greenhouses within the northern edge and buildings attached to the outer east wall. To the southwest (NK 04014 47311) is a lodge. East of the house is a quadrangular steading with further buildings to the north and northeast.
