Full Description
Farmstead and site of Manor. Auchtydonald was originally a property granted by Robert I (1306-1329) to Sir Robert Keith, the ancestor of the Earl Marischals. During the 17th Century it had been in the possession of a family called Cargill. It was the seat of William Scott of Auchtydonald in 1721. Nothing now survives of the manor house of Auchindonald. Mr Ferguson, reporting in 1723, said that it was exceptional in 'not being of stone'. In 1875 its site was marked by 'a few old ash trees'. The farmstead of Auchtydonald now stands in the area. On the 1st edition OS map of 1867 it is called Netherton and is depicted as an almost rectangular farmstead with central open court although the southeast is open. A horsemill stands against the eastern end of the north side. The house stands to the east. There are two areas of trees evident, one to the west of the farm and the other to the south of the house which could possibly be the trees referred to in 1875. By the 2nd edition map of 1888, the farmstead had been extended by ranges added to the north side from both the east and west ends. The horsemill has gone and the trees are no longer depicted. Today the farmstead has some modern additions and a later building stands in the area to the west where trees once stood.
