Full Description

A low rectangular turf enclosure recorded in 2022 during SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. It measures 20 m by 11 m, and occupies most of a narrow promontory between Port Keppies and the Poor Man of Broad Haven. A circa 3 m diameter foxhole is dug into the northwest corner. There is concrete and brick septic tank just outside northeast corner of the enclosure. On the eastern tip of the promontory, adjacent to the enclosure, is a squarish slightly raised platform 5 m diameter, with a concrete 10 cm below the grass, in which is the broken off base of a metal pole at the southeast corner. Running east west across the promontory is a line of parallel metal poles set into concrete bases terminating at a wooden post, which is positioned at the eastern edge of the enclosure. The row is 0.8 m wide and metal poles are set at 2 m intervals. They extend across the connecting path to the top of the coast edge. Possibly the site of a coastal observation post. These were operated by the Observer Corps and the Coastguard. A shelter, latrine and telephone connection were essential elements of the observation posts. The parallel row of metal poles may have functioned as a safe walkway across the very narrow connecting ridge between the shore and the promontory, and then across the narrow and high promontory itself.
