Full Description
Farmstead, still in use, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a quadrangular steading with a narrow central opening in the southern range, and named 'Little Mains'. There is an L-plan building to the south-west. The 2nd edition OS map shows an extension to the north of the eastern range, and two small rectangular building have been added to the south. It is now named 'South Mains'. Current maps show the steading has been altered to U-plan and one of the buildings to the south has been removed. Building survey of the steading was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in February 2022 ahead of proposed conversion. The north wing of the steading was built as a mill, the mill wheel sited on the north side with an east-west lade running alongside. The west and east wings have cobbled and brick floors. A datestone (1846) is built into the south gable of the west wing, and a stone with incised 'P' is built into the east wall of the east wing. The main building appears to have been essentially built in a single phase with only small rooms added later to the north and west. It is constructed of granite fieldstones with granite mouldings and grey slate roof. South of the steading is a small bothy with fireplace and wood panelling, and with scratched graffiti on the north wall west of the fireplace.
