Full Description
Walled garden depicted on historic OS maps which also show a building on the outside of the west end of the northeast wall, and another building to the south west of the southwest wall. A standing building survey of the latter was carried out by MAS in October 2016. The OS 1st edition map shows only the western part of the present structure, the full extent of being shown on the 2nd edition map. The building measures 9.5m by 2.73m externally, comprising a low west section of cold frame or hot bed, and a full-height eastern part, open on the south. It is mostly rubble built, although the lower part of the east gable has goof flat-faced stonework with dressed ashlar blocks used as rybats at the corners. The floor is of large slate slabs, there is a chimney at the centre of the west gable: the roof is now missing. In the southwest corner is a stone lined stoking pit, the heat from which would have run through the flue beneath the floor of the hot bed at the west end of the building. The door of the fire box has a plate identifying the maker as Goddard of Nottingham, and probably dates from between 1851 and 1874, although it may have been reused from a kitchen range. The survey also recorded a small stone-built toilet in the woods to the west of the walled garden, shown on the 2nd edition OS map
