Full Description

Memorial erected in 1971 to commemorate the first crossing of the North Sea by air, from Cruden Bay to Stavanger, Norway, on 30 July 1914. The Norwegian pilot, Trygvve Gran, was serving in the Royal Flying Corps at the time. The flight took off from Cruden Bay rather than the planned field because of thick fog. Gran had been one of the members of Scott's 1910-1913 Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole.
