Full Description

Harbour, marked on Blaeu's early maps. Said to be famous for smuggling in the early 19th Century. The existing harbour works date only from 1894 (memorial tablet dated 17th October), and is formed by an angled granite pier and the quayed shore of a bay. They embody a feature of some interest in connection with harbour-construction in general, in the shape of a tunnel piercing the foundations of the break-water-pier near the present end of its walkway, evidently designed for flushing-out silt. What are probably the remains of another appear at a point further out, where the walkway is ruinous. Site visit in 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey.

Period Notes
Harbour completed 17th October 1894; by 1696 36 fishermen lived in Collieston; by 1880s over 100 fishermen; community moved almost totally to Torry in Aberdeen c.1900.
