Full Description
Farmstead depicted on the OS 1st edition map as a U-plan steading with open court to the southeast, with the southern side projecting to the west. The south range is the longest and contains a barn and a former threshing floor which extends the range to the west. The range, which is of a single storey at the west end and rises to two full storeys at the east, also held a possible smithy, open-fronted cart sheds and a stable block now converted to a tractor shed, workshop and grain store. Above these is a bothy with forestair and two further interlinked loft areas. The west range contains a large byre (reflecting the farms's early emphasis on dairying, now changed to beef cattle and sheep), a turnip shed and an area formerly used as a straw barn. The north range has been opened up and used as a holding area but originally held a byre and other, unknown divisions. On the 2nd edition map a horsemill stands against the west side and another building lies within the courtyard to the east. Modern cattle sheds and a Dutch barn are attached. There are double-pile open-sided covered cattle courts in the yard, reputed to be the oldest in Buchan. Attached to these is a pig house. All of these buildings are constructed of coursed squared whinstone with sandstone dressings and lintels and have slate roofs with stone ridge copings or roofs of corrugated material. Smaller detached buildings include a timber peat house, a stable, a store and a slaughter/salting house. The farmhouse lies to the southeast (see below). When visited in 2000 the farmstead was in good condition and was in use.
