Full Description

House/mansion built in the early 17th century by Alexander, 2nd Lord Forbes of Pitsligo. Considerable additions were made in 1690. It was described as being situated 'in the middle of a rock, in the middle of the glen, which affords terraces on either side...The east side of the back of the house is a storey higher by the cellars being cut out of the rock, and below are three handsome terraces'. The siting evidence suggests that the present Boyndlie House, a Georgian mansion, is probably on the site of the earlier structure. The present house was originally symmetrical, 2-storey with attic and basement, deep-moulded eaves course, and piend roof. The west front is 2-storey 5-window, the centre three recessed, with a later southwest subsequent addition. The east front has an ashlar granite 3-window bow. The New Statistical Account (NSA), however, says that the builder and first possessor was killed at the Battle of Craibstone in 1575 (actually 1571). This may be an error for John of Boyndlie (the only one of the Forbes given that title by Paul) who was slain at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. Boundlie House has the date '1814' above one of the first-floor windows. There are offices to the west of the house (NJ96SW0093).
