Full Description
Former parish church of St Andrew, site of church, and associated graveyard. No longer in ecclesiastical use. The earlier 15th century church was sited almost certainly in the vicinity of the present 19th century church (although in the 19th century the tradition was that it lay a little east of Tyrie Mains - see NJ96SW0033). A vague oblong platform adjacent to the west gable of the present church may possibly be the site of the earlier structure. Several gravestones, undecipherable but clearly pre-19th century, lie in the churchyard. A Pictish symbol stone, the Raven stone (NJ96SW0001) was found in the foundations of the old church. Present church is rectangular, rough ashlar granite with cherry-cocking, north wall blank, rubble. Straight skews with skewputts, bird-cage bellcote with ball finial at the west gable. South wall originally had two round-headed windows with small square-headed windows on each side. The east window was raised to match arched windows. A U-plan gallery was reduced to a west gallery and chancel in early 20th century. There are two Commonwealth war graves within the graveyard: Private W. McRobbie, 5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders (d. 9th October 1916), and Major J. S. Milne, 143 H.A.A. Regiment Royal Artillery (d. 5th April 1946). A war memorial stands to the northeast of the entrance to the church (NJ96SW0059). Former church hall to the south (NJ96SW0147).
