Full Description

Farmstead, still in use. The B-listed farmhouse is dated 1600 but in its present form is late 17th to early 18th century, with 18th and 19th century additions and alterations. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a U-plan farmhouse with a long garden enclosure projecting to the south and steading buildings to the east. The main steading building is L-plan, with a range to the west projecting at an angle forming a V, with a horsemill within the angle. There are two additional small buildings to the north. To the west of the house is a dovecot (NJ96SE0026). The 2nd edition OS map shows alterations to the farmhouse, which is no longer joined to a building to the north, and the enclosure to the south has been reduced in size. The steading has been extended to U-plan and the court covered. The horsemill has been removed and the range to the west has been reduced in size and is no longer adjacent. The dovecot to the west has been removed, as have the two buildings to the north of the steading. Current OS maps show the steading has been incorporated within larger steading buildings but the farmhouse remains unchanged in plan. The farmhouse is a two-storey, rubble built, harled and crowstepped building. The south front was probably originally seven-window, outer but the two at each end have been replaced by granite bays in the late 19th century. The elevation also features a triangular lintel stone dated 'INUI/VIET/UT/I: NULLA/EST VIA 1600' and a mid 19th century centre porch with a Gothic arched window. The north elevation has a M.F. lunette stone and a single storey and attic, mid 18th century back wing with a window flanked by balusters. There is a grotesque head at the north-east skewput. To the north of the farmhouse is a parallel single-storey and loft block of offices with a forestair at the east gable.

Period Notes
Late 17thC house. Lintel dated 1600. South front replaced by granite bays in late 19thC; gothic porch mid 19thC.
