Full Description
Historic Burgh and settlement of Rosehearty. An early settlement is said to have been founded here in the 14th Century. In the 16th Century, Forbes, Lord Pitsligo, is said to have built town lodgings here (known as ‘The Jam’, NJ96NW0003, with a second, contemporary, house, ‘Pitsligo Lodgings’, NJ96NW0019) and encouraged the settlement to develop for fishing, providing houses (on North Street) and boats for every 6 men and upgrading the pier. In exchange he retained a fifth of each catch. The town prospered and was made a Burgh of Barony in 1681 under Alexander, 3rd Lord Pitsligo. At one time, at the height of the herring boom, its fishing fleet was said to rival that of Fraserburgh. The oldest part of the town is to the north west (North Street), a ‘fishertown’ of stone-built 1 and 2 story houses following the shoreline. The ‘new’ town, to the east, is centred around a large square – an elongated space formerly sheltered at the shore end by a tolbooth (now demolished) built in 1683 (NJ96NW0020).
