Full Description

The new parish church of Pitsligo, was built in 1889 and opened in October 1890. Also known as Peathill Kirk and Old Pitsligo Church, but not to be confused with Old Pitsligo Church (ruined) which lies adjacent to the south (MAB28826).

The church was built to a cruciform design. The granite walls were partially lined with pitch pine, and cathedral glass was used for the windows. The site itself is to the north of the original church, which it replaced. The kirkyard was extended and the original wall on the north side was demolished and replaced so that the new Kirk stood within the kirkyard. On the west gable of the church a belfry rises to a height of 20 ft above the roof of the church and contains the bell from the old church. On top of the belfry is a wrought iron weathercock. The east gable of the church is decorated with a granite Ionic cross. The south transept of the church was designed to accommodate the highly ornate Pitsligo Pew, which was acknowledged to be the highlight of the old church (MAB28826).

The church’s projecting transepts contain a re-erected 17th Century loft, the pulpit contains carved wood panels dated to 1634, and the choir seat panels date to 1635. The church also houses an oak memorial tablet listing all from the parish who lost their lives in World War I. The graveyard contains six Commonwealth war graves.
