Full Description

Tidal harbour, roughly triangular in plan, mainly 18th and 19th century in date but possibly incorporating some earlier elements. On the South East side is an old curved rubble pier with some vertically set masonry, possibly pre-18th Century in date. The North West pier is nearly straight, constructed in coursed masonry with a protection wall, now concreted, on seaward side. A small circular concrete light-tower (disused) stands at the end of the pier. A later (19th-20th Century) swimming pool projects into the harbour, contained within concrete walling (not included in listing status). Rosehearty became a busy fishing port in the early 19th Century. The depth of water in the harbour (9' during neap tides, 14' during spring tides) offered good anchorage on an exposed coastline. After it was discovered in 1810 that harbour dues were the right of the feuer rather than the heritor, this income grew and was an important element in the prosperity of the burgh.

Period Notes
Mostly 18th and 19th Century, possibly including some 16th and 17th Century elements.
