Full Description

Tenement, with ground floor retail unit, 2-storey with attic, built of granite with a slate roof. A watching brief was carried out over ground breaking works in 2021 by Cameron Archaeology prior to redevelopment. Four trenches were cut, two within the older structure fronting onto the High Street, one to the rear in an area which had been exterior to the building prior to construction of a modern extension, and one in the rear garden area of the property. Some structural elements of the earlier parts of the building were exposed, including the foundation of the northern most wall fronting onto High Street, two hearths and sleeper walls which had supported the internal floor. An area of made ground was located to the exterior, south of the building. Though a quantity of domestic refuse was recovered, including two sherds of medieval pottery and a clay pipe bowl imprinted with the makers mark, 'BALME MILE END', no archaeological features were identified. Balme were clay pipe manufacturers working in London during the 19th century.
