Full Description

Stone paving slab commemorating Lance Corporal Charles Alfred Jarvis, who was awarded the Victoria Cross during World War I, inscribed with name, rank, regiment at time of the award band the date and action for which the VC was awarded. The stone was unveiled on 23rd August 2014, the 100th anniversary of his feat of bravery for which he was awarded the medal. Jarvis was the first man to be awarded the Victoria Cross in World War I, for his gallantry in blowing up the Bridge of Jemappes to cover the retreat of the army to Mons. Born on the 29th March 1881 in the Admiralty Buildings, Saltoun Place in Fraserburgh (the Coastguard Cottages), Charles Jarvis spent his early years in Carnoustie where he is also commemorated having a street, Jarvis Place, named after him (Angus HER NO53SE0057) as well as being included on the town's war memorial (Angus HER NO53SE0014). Charles Jarvis died in Dundee Royal Infirmary on 19th November 1948, and is buried in Cupar.
