Full Description

Farmstead and watermill. On the 1st edition OS map of 1867, an E-plan watermill is shown (at NJ 9814 6675), open to the southwest with a lade running northeast-southwest to the northeast face and a T-plan building to the south. On the 2nd edition of 1888 these buildings have all been replaced, by a large square steading with central courtyard (at NJ 9810 6678), a rectangular mill to the east, and a farmhouse to the southeast. These later buildings all survive, with modifications. A desk based assessment of the site was carried out in 2007 by AOC Archaeology. A programme of archaeological work was carried out by AOC in November 2012, comprising building recording of the steading and trial trenching evaluation. A total of ten trenches were excavated but no features or artefacts of archaeological significance were recorded.
