Full Description
Market cross, erected in the early 17th Century. In 1858 only the shaft remained and that had been moved from the east side of the square, where it once stood on the hexagonal basement, to the centre of the square. The former position could not be established. The supporting base for the cross was built in 1997 as part of the Fraserburgh Central Area improvements, when the position of the cross was moved. The shaft and upper part are old. The finial was replaced in 1988. The shaft bears the inscriptions 'LAS' and the date '1736'. The decorative finial to the cross bears the Royal Arms of Scotland on the North side surrounded by the insignia of the Order of St Andrew. On the South are the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom surrounded by the insignia of the Order of the Garter. The south of the shaft bears the burgh arms of Fraserburgh and the north the burgh arms of Faithlie.

Charter of erection dated 1613; date in shaft 1736; moved in 1858; finial replaced in 1988; cross moved in 1997.
