Full Description

Former threadmill, built in the late 18th century. It was converted to a house in Victorian times, and then to the Anderson and Woodman Institute in 1923. The threadmill books run from 1799 until 1815, the final year it was in operation, and remain preserved in the institute. It is a three-storey, six-window squared granite building with a low second floor, the first and second floors are now one internally, skewputts and coped chimneys. The mill was driven by a detached waterwheel with a rope drive across the North Ugie Water to the North gable. Only traces of the ladeworks remain. The former threadmill manager's house is adjacent (NJ95NW0068). It is now Strichen Library, which has on display a cup-marked stone from excavation at Strichen stone circle (NJ95SW0001).
