Full Description

Farmstead still in use. The original farmstead of Claystiles, which lay to the east of the present steading, is depicted on the 1st edition OS map. It shows a large U-shaped steading open to the south, a rectangular building to the north, two small buildings to the south and house with attached enclosure to the east. The new steadings were added in the 1870s at a cost of £900. West of the steading is a sluice and millpond from which a lade runs north to a rectangular building. By the time of the OS 2nd edition map all of these buildings appear to have been removed. The house at this date stands in the east of the site, but the site of the former farm buildings and pond are now garden, with enclosures and another building to the south. West of the original farmstead is a new E-shaped steading with courts open to the south, and some small buildings to the south. The road to the farm has been moved south to run south of the new steading. Current maps show that the building south of the garden has been removed. The steading remains with additions to the north and within the courts.
