Full Description
Dovecot, positioned centrally in the semi-circular steading (NJ94NE0035), dating from circa 1800. Entrance to the loft is through a low door on the west leading from the loft over the cart shed. Semi-circular pigeon entrance on south wall, which probably had shutters pierced with ports, one of each side. Blind entrances on east and west sides to compliment that on the front of the tower. There is also a blind triptych window to match the one below lighting the room below the pigeon loft. Inside are good quality stone nesting boxes which line the walls and measure 12 inches square and 12 inches deep. There are 389 boxes with few missing or damaged. The dovecot is completed by a pyramidal piended roof in slate, capped with an elegant lantern, six pillars with Doric capitals, a lead cupola and iron weather vane. The dovecot was in danger of collapse but has now been restored, and is part of the Aberdeenshire Farming Museum.
