Full Description
Smithy dating from the 18th-19th centuries. A single storey 5-bay rubble block with a 3-bay extension at 33 The Square, formerly blacksmith's workshop, the low range converted to offices, 1993. A watching brief in 2008 during groundworks for a garage immediately north of 1 Smiddy Lane recorded remnants of a cobbled yard overlain with a hard packed deposit of smithy waste comprising ash and slag. At a lower level were fragmentary remains of earlier cobbling. Finds consisted of several discarded or broken iron objects, including horseshoes, as well as a few sherds of 19th-century ceramics were retrieved from deposits overlying the uppermost cobble surface.
