Full Description

Remains of pre-Reformation chapel and graveyard mentioned in 1551. Only the foundations remained in 1868. In 1972 the OS observed that the site of the chapel was evident as a turf-covered hollow, orientated east-west, but there were insufficient remains for accurate survey and measurement. No information regarding the dedication. The south and west walls of what was probably the burial ground enclosure are visible as a turf-covered bank but no gravestones visible. The roughly rectangular depression marking the site of this chapel is situated in the northwest sector of a rectilinear plantation bank enclosing a clump of beech trees. The depression measures about 13m from east to west by 7m transversely and is up to 0.35m in depth. No other traces of the building are visible. The plantation enclosure measures internally 33.4m from east to west by 23.3m transversely. Its earthen bank is 3m in thickness and up to 0.7m in height, and its outer face on the west and east is revetted with drystone masonry. Although a few individual trees grow on top of the bank, the majority are enclosed within its circuit.
