Full Description

Dovecot depicted dating from the 17th century. A dovecote is situated about 190m east north east of Grandholm (or Grandhome) House (NJ81SE0028) on the south side of the main driveway. It is rectangular on plan, measuring 4.85m by 4.15m; its walls are 0.7m thick and are constructed of random rubble with dressed granite quoins. A flagstone rat-course, projecting 0.25m from the wall-face, is set at a height of 2.15m above the ground. The door on the south side has a dressed granite lintel and jambs, and dressed granite has also been used for the crow-steps on the gables. It has a saddle-backed slated roof with corbie stepped gables. The skewputt at the south-west corner of the dovecote bears the initials IP, while that on the south-east is dated 1709. On both the north and south the pitched slate roof is broken by a single flight-hole of modern lead construction. The interior of the dovecote contains about 318 sandstone nesting boxes.
