Full Description

Bishop's manor or palace, built on an island, now a promontory, in 'Bishop's Loch' or 'Loch Goul'. Turf-covered remains of three buildings lie beside the chapel (NJ91SW0002). The buildings comprise an L-shaped building (dimensions: 8.53m by 2.43m) on the West side of the chapel, a building to the East (dimensions: 14.93m by 4.57m) and one to the South (dimensions: 14.93m by 4.26m). The manor/palace was used by the Bishops of Aberdeen prior to the building of the Chanonry in 1329, and stood on a raised area of the island. The manor/palace was probably erected some time before 1267. Bishop Hugh de Benham, Bishop of Aberdeen during from 1272, is said to have met his death here in 1282. The site has been suggested that the site was originally a crannog.
