Full Description

Mansion house, still in residential use, possibly built in 1781-82 although the estate is older and it may be a remodelled older building. Alexander Fordyce bought the estate in 1770 but went bankrupt later that year. It was then acquired by John Orrock, and there are large 'O's above the attic gable windows that are his imprint. The three-storey gabled main block has single-storey piend roofed wings of the same depth. The south front is of dressed granite and is five-window, with one blind window at the ground floor and two at the second. There is one door with a rectangular fanlight and one window to each each wing. The north front is three-window, with the west windows being blind, and one-window in the wing. The ground floor is harled and the rest is dressed granite and there is a tripartite doorpiece has a semi-elliptical traceried fanlight. The east wall of the east wing has semi-circular headed openings at the attic in the gables. The simply treated interior has original woodwork, a plain railed stair, and a chimneypiece at the first floor. The west wing has a modern garage entrance and the east wing a modern porch. The driveway contains the probable remains of a pond with fountain in the centre of a small lawn and there are B-listed gatepiers from circa 1782 on the north axis of the house. They consist four square ball-capped ashlar granite gatepiers with railings and monolith ball capped footgates beween. The upper parts of the central piers were dismantled in 1968, with the stone laid aside for re-erection. There is a mains farm to the north (NJ91NE0028) and a dovecot to the south-west that is contemporary with the house (NJ91NE0013).
