Full Description

Remains of a recumbent stone circle, 'The Temple Stones', that stood on the top of the ridge on the home farm of Potterton House. Only the recumbent stone, its accompanying pillars (both fallen), and a fourth stone remain.

The recumbent stone is 2.74 m long, 1.83 m high, and from 0.46 m to 1.37 m thick. The east pillar is 2.6 m long and 1.68 m broad, varying from 0.3 m to 0.76 m thick. The west pillar is 2.74 m long, 1.37 m broad, and 0.46 m thick. Near the centre of the western pillar's outer face two small cup-marks, set close together, were recorded, however, there is now no trace of these. The fourth stone (now removed) was situated at the base of the recumbent stone, at right-angles to it and within the circle, and measured 1.37 m long by 0.91 m broad by 0.3 m thick. Three smaller stones at the site may have formed part of the circle. There is now a field-clearance heap in the centre of the site.
