Full Description
Former Aberdeen Crematorium, built in 1937 designed by R Leslie Rollo. It ceased operation as a crematorium in 1975 and is now in use as a funeral home. It is an Art Deco style building, chapel and halls of remembrance sited within a Memorial Garden, constructed from bull-faced, squared and coursed, pink and grey granite with polished granite ashlar to the porch and parapet coping. There is a band course, some polished and recessed window jambs, coped wallhead parapets to the stepped roofline with flat roofs and stone mullions. The chapel interior has a granite catafalque, raised reredos-style table, timber-screened organ loft and boarded timber dadoes and ceiling. The chapel is flanked by memorial halls with timber casket shelves. The Memorial Garden has flat-coped, random rubble, stepped boundary walls and two pairs of flat-coped, square-plan, bull-faced ashlar gatepiers with quadrants and decorative two-leaf metal-work gates with 'ABERDEEN CREMATORIUM' at the top rail. Within the building is a Second World War memorial plaque to 'members of his majesty's forces who died in the service of their country and were cremated here.'
