The monument is a pink polished granite obelisk on a square-plan base and plinth and bearing a recessed tooled grey granite panel to the north. The obelisk was originally in the forecourt of Marischal College (NJ90NW0040), however in 1905 it was moved to the Duthie Park (NJ90SW0989) when the college was extended. The monument was also used as an Ordnance Survey trigonometrical survey intersected station (sighting point), as depicted on OS maps.
