Full Description

Cemetery, dating from circa 1880, enclosed by coursed Aberdeen bonded granite rubble walls. The original cemetery, depicted on the OS 2nd edition may, lies mainly south of Allenvale Road with a lodge at the west entrance. A smaller area north of the road has since been extended to the west. South of the road the cemetery walls have saddleback coping, with square-plan gatepiers with gableted caps, and 2-leaf decorative cast-iron gates at the entrances. The north cemetery is terraced, in three areas, the walls with shallow-pointed coping. There are decoratively chamfered gatepiers to the west flanked by low coped walls and with 2-leaf cast-iron gates. To the centre and east of the south wall are entrances with square-plan gatepiers with corniced necks and gableted caps, and 2-leaf cast-iron gates. The lodge, dated 1889, is single storey with attic,of 3 bays, built of coursed, squared, rough-faced grey granite with architraved surrounds, long and short quoins, and terracotta finials to the apex of the gables. The roof is of grey slate with a decorative terracotta ridge. Windows are predominantly sash and case. Adjoining the northeast wall of the south cemetery is a monument to James Saint, designed by J. B. Pirie, 1892. Of granite ashlar it has a simple plinth base with elongated ionic capital surmounted by an inscription panel with decorative concave-shouldered surround with two horizontal bands of scrolls, an architraved surround, pediment ornamented with anthemion motifs and a decorative finial. The Allenvale War Memorial (NJ90SW1017) stands within the north cemetery. The cemetery contains 164 Commonwealth war graves of 1914-1918 (those with no headstone named on the memorial), and 110 of the Second World War. Details of the graves have been recorded by the Aberdeen graveyard guardians group. The cemetery also contains the grave of architect J Fenton Wyness: a Corennie granite headstone was unveiled in 2022.
