Full Description

Parish church, also known as Ruthrieston South Church, designed by A Marshal Mackenzie in 1890, and completed in 1891. It is a simple gothic church built of coursed Aberdeen bond granite, on a T-plan with a gableted bellcote. A hall was added in 1904 with further additions in 1971. The entrance (south) elevation is asymmetrical, of 7 bays with a steeply pitched gabletted porch, and a pointed arched doorway. The west, gabled, elevation has a pointed arch window of 5 lights which have alternating pointed arch and trefoil headed windows. Above is a trefoil window, and the apex is surmounted by a bellcote with Celtic cross on its apex. Below the window on the west wall are two linked war memorial tablets, commemorating those from the congregation killed during the First and Second World Wars. They list the names of those lost, with inscriptions reading: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE OF THE GALLANT MEN OF THE CONGREGATION/ WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 'THE LAMB WHICH DWELLS AMIDST THE THRONE SHALL O'ER THEM STILL PRESIDE' 1939-1945. The church also holds a WWI communion table and WWI and II memorial tablet formerly in Holburn Central Church (NJ90NW1215). The churchyard is surrounded by rubble walls which on the west side are stepped up to form gatepiers. The church replaced the 'Iron Kirkie' mission hall which stood near the Old Ruthrieston Pack bridge (NJ90SW0023).
