Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition , on which it is named Mains, shows a long L-plan range with another L-plan building to the northeast. By the time of the 2nd edition (on which it is named Mains of Charlestown) a horsemill had been added on the west side of the range and another long rectangular building added to the southeast. The farm was on the estate of Charleston, the estate being developed in the 19th century by the Menzies, laird of Pitfoddels family. Finds of small ceramic vessels (described as 'pill bottles') and pottery sherds have been reported by the landowner (pre 2004) at the north end of the dyke of abutting the fam on the north.
