Full Description

Ferryhill engine shed, motive power depot and store, dating from the mid 19th century with later additions. Depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition map. It is a single storey, 12-bay building on a rectangular plan, later extended by 4 bays, and subsequently by another 4. It has round-arched windows and pilastered bays, with mainly small-pane cast-iron framed windows. The 2nd edition OS maps shows a turntable to the east of the shed. In the early 20th century the Caledonian Railway expanded the site into adjacent fields with the addition of a large additional shed and a turntable (NJ90SW0407).
