Full Description
Ferryhill engine shed, motive power depot and store, dating from the mid-19th Century with later additions. Depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition map. It is a single storey, 12-bay building on a rectangular plan, later extended by four bays, and subsequently by another four. It has round-arched windows and pilastered bays, with mainly small-pane, cast-iron framed windows.
In the early 20th Century, the Caledonian Railway expanded the site into adjacent fields with the addition of a large additional shed and a turntable (MAB26417). The 2nd edition OS maps show a turntable to the east of the engine shed.
