Full Description
Bridge built 1829-31 by engineers John Smith (masonry) and Samuel Brown (ironwork), with later alterations. It is an early suspension bridge with flat-link chains supporting steel (originally cast-iron) framed wooden deck. The pylons are of ashlar construction, tapered with semi-circular archways. An elliptical arch on the north side was added in 1886. The original wrought iron suspender rods were replaced with steel in 1930, and the deck was strengthened at the same time. It was closed in 1984, the road is now carried by the Queen Elizabeth Bridge, but it remains in use as a footbridge. Also known as the Chain Briggie.
