Full Description

Possible remains of coastal defence site. This concrete base measures 3.85m by 3.7m and 0.4m high with steel studs or bolts that would have secured the superstructure to the base. on the seaward side is a concrete wall 3m long, 0.6m thick and 1.5m high with the remains of 4 angle-irons set in its top and an aperture 0.65m wide at ground level mid-way along it. It may have been for winching apparatus to carry material between the beach and the cliff top - the small building would have housed a petrol or diesel winch and the concrete block was the foundation of a metal tower to carry a winch line clear of the cliff face. See also NJ90SE0121 and NJ90SE0120. At the foot of the cliff below these structures are several anti-tank blocks which have been pushed from their original position half way up the slope where they blocked the path leading from the inlet to the top of the cliff. Site visit in May 2023 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey suggested that alternatively the concrete base was for a cableway or Blondin apparatus located at the top of the cliff above the landing beach of a fishing station.
